Tsukuba - science city near Tokyo
Tsukuba is a city located near Tokyo that is the home of many scientists. What is interesting is that it was planned and constructed entirely for the use of science (つくば市, Tsukuba-shi?). It's twin city is Cambridge, MA, which coincidentally is where a lot of geophysics research is done at MIT (and of course at Caltech where I did some graduate work, as it is in California basically the heart of earthquakes in the U.S.)
clogged toilet in japan
Clogged toilet
There are two styles of toilets commonly found in Japan.[1][2] The oldest type is a simple squat toilet, which is still somewhat common in public conveniences. After World War II, modern Western-type flush toilets and urinals became common. The current state of the art for Western-style toilets is the bidet toilet, which, as of 2004, are installed in more than half of Japanese households.[3][4][5] In Japan, these bidets are commonly called washlets, a brand name of Toto Ltd., and include many advanced features rarely seen outside of Asia. Depending on the exact model, these bidets are designed to open the lid when they sense a user nearby, wash the anus or vulva of the user, dry afterwards with warm air, flush automatically and close the lid after use.
Ecotwaza Web
eco+waza is;
A Bridge between Japanese eco-friendly technology and the World We are a bridge stretching from the Japanese archipelago towards the rest of the world, on which traverse a caravan of unique environmental friendly goods. Our mission is to create a sustainable network of local businesses throughout the world and lower the ecological footprint of the global society.
What does “Ecotwaza” mean?
“Eco” is the abbreviation for “ecology” and “waza” is Japanese for “technology” or “craftsmanship.” The “t”, which can also be viewed as “+” literally means “and” in Japanese. Hence, as its namesake suggests, founded in 2006, Ecotwaza aims to lower the ecological footprint of the global society by communicating ecological mind and technology/crafts to the world.
Why Japan? Why small business?
Traditional Japanese philosophy and culture is based on the awareness that human is merely a part of Mother Nature, forming a unique set of sustainable customs and lifestyle. On the contrary, the country has had its painful yet memorable lesson of environment pollution as a result of rapid economic growth in the 1960s. Through its tradition and having learnt from its mistakes, Japan possesses, in its small business sectors, the seeds of state-of-the-art environmental technology. However, since they are relatively small and not equipped with English proficiency, they remain invisible to and untapped by the world. Ecotwaza is, to the eyes of the globe, an electron microscope that magnifies and put into focus the massive hidden potential of the Japanese business seeds.

Sakura Onsen

The neighborhood of Sugamo is not yet famous for its mineral hot springs. A traditional district better known for its temples, bustling shopping avenue and thriving seniors' community, Sugamo leads a relatively quiet existence, despite its status on the Yamanote Line. It’s as unlikely a place as any for a sophisticated urban getaway, but Sakura Onsen, tucked away in Sugamo's silent back streets, feels like a high-priced ryokan, and also happens to be the most affordable luxury spa you will find in Tokyo.
